11-Year Old Honored at the LAFD Event for Saving her Grandmother's Life through CPR

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) honored several life savers on 22nd January 2015 and Kendall Stilwell was one of them. Kendall has become a hero by saving her 71-year old grandmother Rita Lovato. In an event organized at the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank to promote CPR learning in general public, Kendall explained how she turned into a lifesaver. She recalled the incident in tears that her grandmother was not breathing and was completely drenched in sweat. Kendall called 911 for help and then started performing CPR on her grandmother. “I felt really scared because I thought I was going to really lose my nana, I called 911, and I began to do CPR. It was a really scary moment.” However, the fifth grader successfully performed this life saving technique and saved her grandmother. “I was really happy that she made it.” In accordance with the Deputy Fire Chief Daryl C. Arbuthnott, Rita Lovato experienced a cardiac arrest and became unconscious on 25th June 6:40 a.m. When panic-stricken Kendall called 911, the paramedic/firefighter asked her to carry out CPR on her grandmother. “What I need you to do, sweetie, is take a nice deep breath. We’re going to get you some help but I need you to answer some questions for me, I need you to be big and strong for me.” The paramedic persuaded her to perform CPR and directed her the steps for carrying out hands-only CPR while counting out 1.2.3.4. In the meantime, Woodland Hills firefighters made it to Lovato's home and took her to West Hills Hospital. The Deputy Fire Chief explained that, “Kendall was understandably emotionally unstable at the time but demonstrated bravery.” Kendall was present at the event with her grandmother where she was honored along with the 911 dispatcher who explained her how to perform CPR. At that point of time, the Deputy Fire Chief enlightened the audience with the fact that bystander CPR can actually increase the survival rate of the ones going into cardiac arrest. http://ktla.com/2015/01/22/11-year-old-girl-who-performed-cpr-on-grandmother-among-those-honored-at-lafd-event/
