What if you go to bed one Friday night and woke up in the hospital after 5 days? Emergency never comes with a warning. Every year, in the United States alone, more or less 326,200 people belonging to different age groups experience EMS-assessed out-of-hospital non-traumatic Sudden Cardiac Arrest and unfortunately 9 out of 10 victims do not survive. According to Leon County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), basic knowledge of CPR can indicate the difference between life and death. The data at the Leon County EMS shows that bystanders in the community only performed CPR 20 percent of the times before the arrival of the paramedics. In this regard, the Leon County Government has launched a free annual community-wide CPR training event called “Press the Chest.†The annual “Press the Chest†CPR training event organized by Leon County, encourages people to act confidently at the time of emergency and save lives. The 5th annual “Press the Chest†event was held at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, 505 W. Pensacola St. This event was organized in association with the Florida A&M University Student Health Services, Florida Department of Health in Leon County, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, the Tallahassee Democrat and Capital Regional Medical Center. “Press the Chest†teaches the participants the latest recommendations and procedures for applying CPR, and using AEDs. An American Heart Association CPR Anytime kit, that includes a CPR manikin, educational materials, DVD and supplies is given to every participant of “Press the Chest".
