One of the greatest feelings that a person can have is when he or she has saved the life of another. Just walking into tomorrow and seeing that person who died or nearly died playing, dancing and enjoying their family brings a lump in your throat and a tear in your eyes. How does one get to enjoy such a feeling? Well, there are many opportunities to choose from, but the one that allows you to help people while working or not is as the Basic Life Support (BLS), provider. To join this amazing group of people, one must take a BLS class that consists of a set of skills and knowledge that WILL make a difference in some else's life. Once the class has completed, a card is given to you indicating that you have been trained to react to a cardiac emergency. What this means is that you are skilled in assisting a person who suffers a heart attack, cardiac arrest, or choking. You are also trained to use the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). A defibrillator is a machine that delivers a shock that can change a lethal heart rhythm into one the flows oxygenated blood through the body, especially to the brain. So, who is able to become a BLS provider? If you can walk, talk and perform minor athletic activities, you are capable of becoming a BLS provider. There are no discrepancies and being handicap does not prevent you from learning or participating in an event where a person needs help. A BLS provider is also known as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). The EMT’s training is beyond that of a basic BLS card holder or first aid provider. The qualifications are the same, but the difference is that EMT’s work in hospitals, clinics on ambulances and fire engines. The EMT is not only trained to treat a person suffering from cardiac arrest but other emergencies as well. When the EMT has worked for a minimum of one year, he or she is now able to apply for paramedic school. Paramedics are at the top of the food chain in the prehospital realm. What this means is that there are no doctors or nurses who respond to emergencies from a 911 standpoint. 911 is when someone calls the emergency line to get help. Depending on the nature of the emergency, the 911 operator will send either EMT’s or paramedics. The paramedic is also a BLS provider but with more advanced level training in recognizing what type of sickness someone has or how to treat any trauma. To be able to provide BLS to a person, one must complete Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training. The class should take no longer than four hours, and the renewal class is now less than an hour. Classes can be found online and with CPR Certification Headquarters.  Classes are found by checking your local advertising agencies as well. To go from BLS first aid to BLS EMT, one can attend a Junior College (JC). The typical length of the EMT course is two semesters. You will learn how to assist in delivering a baby, stop bleeding, breath for a person by artificial means, splint broken bones and recognize certain ailments that the EMT can take care of. You will also recognize the need for advanced life support from the paramedic or emergency room staff. To become the BLS provider Paramedic, in some areas you will need to attend school for one year and others, for four years. However, the length of training varies across the country. The ones with the four-year course get you a bachelor's degree. You will take care of people with various levels of acuity and injury. The training is sufficient enough to make a big difference in whether someone lives or die. However, the majority of the time you are called to help someone is because they have fallen, or is suffering a heart attack or stroke. The choices you make comes from your training as well as your traits. It is not uncommon for BLS providers to aim high and achieve their goals. The goals include becoming a Physician Assistant (PA) A nurse, or doctor. The reason people chose these high goals is that they have had success as a BLS provider from saving many lives. The gratitude is to aim high, go for it, and walk away as a respected caregiver who started off with just a BLS certificate to do CPR. The renewal period for a CPR card is two years when the training is from the American Heart Association (AHA). For the EMT and Paramedic, the renewal period is every two years with the state, county, and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) card. By far and the easiest way to know how to help someone who suffers from a medical emergency such as a cardiac arrest or stroke is to take the CPR certification course. Without it, someone you love misses out on life. With the training, someone you love may live on to see tomorrow.
